On the one hand, free radicals lower the effective use of hydrogen peroxide. This leads to poor whiteness improvement. On the other hand, they react with reactive groups on cellulose molecules. This causes fiber strength loss. When local catalytic decomposition becomes too concentrated, serious defects like pinholes appear. To solve this problem, textile processors usually add a hydrogen peroxide stabilizer to the bleaching recipe. It chelates and adsorbs metal ions to control the decomposition rate.
