Bleaching is an essential step in processing cotton and its blends. Hydrogen peroxide is the main bleaching agent. Its performance directly affects final product quality — whiteness, hand feel, and strength. However, in actual production, the stability of hydrogen peroxide under hot alkaline conditions is always a technical challenge for textile processors.

The key problem is metal ions. Bleaching water and grey fabrics often contain metal ions like calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper. In hot alkaline conditions, these ions catalyze the rapid decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. This produces many free radicals. On the one hand, free radicals lower the effective use of hydrogen peroxide. This leads to poor whiteness improvement. On the other hand, they react with reactive groups on cellulose molecules. This causes fiber strength loss. When local catalytic decomposition becomes too concentrated, serious defects like pinholes appear. To solve this problem, textile processors usually add a hydrogen peroxide stabilizer to the bleaching recipe. It chelates and adsorbs metal ions to control the decomposition rate.
